Trains (Hopefully not buses)

Haley got off the train from New Haven to New York and found a bench to sit and wait for the train from New York to Savannah. She played with her phone, half wondering if Jack would change his mind about going.

Ticket in hand, he headed over for the train platform. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he looked around for an empty seat and saw Haley on the bench. Quietly, he moved to stand beside where she sat. "About how long's the ride from here to Savannah?"

Haley looked at him and smiled. She was glad that he decided to come. "It's about 7 hours."

He nodded and ran a finger over the ipod in his pocket idly. He probably wasn't going to end up using it now. "Good to know." He didn't really know what else to say to her after what happened.

"It's fine," he said neutrally. "You asked me to be here and what was I going to say? No? I don't think I have it in me to," he admitted, muttering. "It's no big deal."

Haley put in her headphones and pulled out her kindle. She wasn't sure whether he actually wanted to talk to her, so she figured it best to let him take the lead.

After a few minutes, Haley sighed and took her headphones out of her ears. "Jack, are we really going to be like this the entire trip?"

He frowned for a minute, trying to figure out what she meant. Then he shrugged. "I don't know." To be honest, he had been hoping they'd have caught separate trains; he hadn't planned for this.

Haley sighed and stood up, "I'm going to drive. This is just too weird. I'll meet you there." She picked up her bag and began to walk out the door. "I'm sorry this is so awkward."

He let out a small groan. "Would you just wait? Look, it's going to be awkward. It can be awkward here or it can be awkward there. Which do you want? I mean, we can get it out now or we can sit there with everyone watching and it will be hellishly weird." He was rambling again. A good sign?

Haley turned and grabbed his hand, "Come on. You're coming with me and I'm not taking no for an answer. If this is going to be awkward, I'm going to have something to concentrate on other than the awkwardness."

He followed along out of sheer confusion for a few moments before shrugging and trailing behind her. "All right. What are you going to concentrate on aside from the awkward?"

"Driving of course." She said, "Unless you'd rather me concentrate on the awkwardness and run us off the road." Haley joked as she smiled lightly.

He nodded and wondered idly how they were going to survive the car trip. And what he was going to do if either of them decided that it was awkward enough that he needed to get out. "Okay then. Want me to pay for gas since you're driving?"

Haley shook her head, "Nope. It's cool. Grandma sent me some money for my birthday. And the car gets decent gas mileage for being a 1969 Mustang."

"All right." He felt like the spawn of a broken record and a bobblehead but he really had no idea what to say to her after she'd blown up on him. After a few minutes, he shook his head. "How do we fix this?"

Haley shrugged and hailed a cab. "I have no idea. I've never been in a relationship before and Nate's not the best example."

Haley sighed, "Look Jack. I'm sorry for what I said, I didn't mean it to come out like that, but this is never going to work if you can't forgive me. I'm not saying forgive and forget. In my experience, that's never really worked, but you do have to let it go."

"Pardon me for having a bit of a hard time forgiving the one person that I handed my heart over to and then watched as she not only crushed it but crushed it publicly," he snapped. "I was attempting to have a simple frigging conversation with you in hopes of squashing the awkwardness."
